More than 250,000 households in the Czech Republic are without power due to devastating downpours, the CTK agency reported on Sunday, citing energy suppliers.

The situation was most dramatic in the eastern part of the Moravian-Silesian region on the border with Poland, where more than 100,000 households were without electricity.

Rainfall had softened the ground, causing many trees to fall onto overhead power lines and high-voltage cables. Forecasters expect the rain to continue into Monday.

There were significant disruptions to rail services as trees fell onto the tracks and floodwaters inundated parts of the track. About 40 rail lines had to be closed completely.

Studénka station, the main line between Prague and Ostrava, was flooded. This caused numerous Eurocity services to Poland and Slovakia to be cancelled. Authorities urged citizens to avoid travelling by car or train where possible.
