MEXICO CITY (AP) — Rescue teams found another body Wednesday at a tequila distillery in Mexico, a day after an explosion and fire left six people dead. Two workers were injured.
The factory is owned by the Jose Cuervo company, one of Mexico’s most famous tequila brands.
Local civil defense reported on X that the last body had been found at a site where large containers had collapsed.
The company said Tuesday that the explosion occurred while workers were performing maintenance work. Authorities said Tuesday night that the situation was under control, but a fire broke out Wednesday morning in a storage area containing cardboard and other materials.
The town of Tequila is located about 375 miles northwest of Mexico City. It is overshadowed by a volcano and surrounded by plantations of agave, the plant from which the drink is produced. Life in the municipality of 40,000 revolves around tequila production and the tourism it generates.
