Two female passengers sparked outrage in China after locking a crying toddler in the bathroom of a Juneyao Airlines flight from Guiyang to Shanghai on August 24. incident came to light after one of the women, identified only as Gou-tingtingposted a video on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

  • What happened: The child would be to travel with her grandparents and cried throughout the flight. The video shows the two passengers in a locked toilet with the child. One of them can be heard saying, “We’re not letting you out unless you stop crying.” After the girl is quiet, the woman filming picks her up and says, “If you make another noise, we’ll come back.”

  • National outrage: The airline initially reported that the two passengers — who are not related to the child — had taken her to the toilet to “teach” her with the permission of her grandmother. However, as criticism mounted, the airline apologized and condemned the passengers’ behavior. Guo, who has since set her Douyin account to private, claimed that her intention was to provide others with a “peaceful flight.” However, many accused her of being heartless and bullying the child. Chinese state media also criticized the women’s “inappropriate” behavior and called for more understanding of young children.
