The German government was not informed in advance of the details of the Ukrainian invasion of Russian territory, the deputy government spokesman said on Monday.
Kiev apparently prepared the cross-border offensive in Russia’s Kursk region “in the utmost secrecy and without feedback” from partners, Wolfgang Büchner said.
“So far it appears to be a spatially limited operation,” he added.
Nearly a week after the surprise attack by Ukraine, Büchner said it would be “unwise” to make public statements about the military operation as the situation was still very uncertain.
“That also applies to the use of specific weapons systems,” said Büchner, who was asked about suggestions that German weapons would be used in Kursk.
Büchner said that Berlin and Kiev are in close contact with each other.
The German Ministry of Defense has stated separately that there are no fundamental objections to Ukraine using weapons supplied by Germany in the fight against Russian troops in Russia.
A ministry spokesman said international law dictates that a defending state may defend itself on the territory of the aggressor, and Ukraine has so far complied with the law.
