Five climate activists have glued themselves to the apron of Germany’s Cologne/Bonn airport, bringing air traffic to a standstill, a police spokesman said on Wednesday morning.
“We are trying to free them, but that could take some time,” the spokeswoman said.
Criminal charges have been filed for violations of the Assembly Act, dangerous interference with air traffic and trespassing, she added. An investigation into how the activists got to the site is ongoing.
The protest group Last Generation wrote on the social media platform X that several activists had cut through a fence and glued themselves to the asphalt near the runways.
According to Last Generation, the action was part of an international protest campaign calling for a phase-out of fossil fuels by 2030.
The protest would take place simultaneously at airports in more than 10 countries worldwide, according to the report.
