ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – No one was injured when a ceiling collapsed Friday at Egypt Valley Country Club east of Grand Rapids.

The collapse occurred in a second-floor ballroom of the country club on Knapp Street NE near Egypt Valley Avenue in Ada Township. There was no one in the room at the time.

“There is a suspended ceiling. It’s like a metal frame. That metal frame came loose. That was what it amounted to,” explained David Murray, chief of the Ada Township Fire Department. “Then all the sprinkler pipes were taken down, allowing water to flow through the building.”

The roof itself did not collapse, Murray said.

“The country club crews did an excellent job. Before we got here, they had turned off the water, turned off the electricity and were working on the natural gas,” the chief said.

He said emergency responders checked to make sure everyone was present and no one was injured.

There would have been a wedding rehearsal in the ballroom on Friday evening and a wedding there on Saturday.

It’s unclear what caused the collapse, Murray said.

The damage assessment was still ongoing Friday afternoon, but it was significant, Egypt Valley executives told News 8. Murray said there was “a lot of water damage.” The first step will be to clean up the water, he said, after which reconstruction can begin.
