BIRMINGHAM, Alabama. (WIAT) —The parking lot of the Marion Ridge Apartments was riddled with shell casings Tuesday night. a shooting that left one dead.
According to Birmingham police, multiple shots were fired after a physical altercation at the Gallant Drive apartment complex. Asia Poole, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene and a man was taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“It’s alarming how many people were there and didn’t intervene in the fight to prevent the situation from happening. It’s sad,” said Sgt. Laquitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department.

Poole’s car was also stolen from the scene, but has since been recovered by investigators. BPD says the incident was also captured on video.
“The videos are out there and it’s just horrific, showing the violence,” said Willie Goldsmith, president of Apple Valley Neighborhood. “The amount of gunfire, I mean, it sounds like you’re in Beirut or something, and then the screaming and the booing, it’s almost an inhumane situation.”
Goldsmith said the apartment complex where the incident occurred has been a source of concern to the neighborhood for years.
“I moved to this neighborhood 24 years ago and the things that have happened in the last three to four years… I don’t even recognize them anymore,” he said.
According to Birmingham District Attorney Nicole King, a lawsuit was filed against the complex in 2021 for public nuisance.

Following Tuesday’s incident, the Public Prosecution Service’s Drug Nuisance Abatement Team has announced its next steps.
“As a city council member, I think we have to remain vigilant,” said Birmingham City Councilor Clinton Woods. “We can’t give in to apathy. We have to keep fighting to find ways to address this in our community.”
Woods says steps are being taken to address senseless violence in District 1 and he is calling on the community to unite as one.
“To see just men coming together to watch young ladies fight is just not what I expect from young men in the community. So we all have to step up,” Woods said.
