At least 32 people were killed and several others injured when a suicide bomber and gunmen attacked a popular beach spot in the Somali capital on Saturday, a police spokesman said.

According to Abdifatah Adan Hassan, about 63 people were injured, some of whom were in serious condition.

Video footage shows a number of bodies and wounded in Mogadishu’s Abdiaziz district.

According to local media, the attack was carried out by militants from al-Shabaab, which controls large parts of southern and central Somalia.

The group is affiliated with al-Qaeda and has waged a brutal insurgency against the UN-backed government in Somalia for nearly 20 years.
