At least 20 bodies have been recovered from Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after a ferry capsized just a few hundred meters from its destination.

The boat was en route from the town of Minova in South Kivu and sank when it arrived on the coast of Goma on Thursday morning.

A video circulating online shows the boat tipping to one side and then sinking.

It is still unclear how many people were on board, but several survivors told Reuters news agency that there may have been at least 200 people on board.

Reuters quoted a local migration authority as saying that about 45 men and 35 women were registered as passengers, but their ages had not been verified.

A local activist, Aaron Ashuza, who is on the coast, told the BBC he saw bodies being pulled from the river and said the injured had been taken to hospital.

At least two children died after being taken to hospital following the accident, according to AFP.

Such accidents are common in DR Congo, where boats are often overcrowded with passengers who are rarely given safety vests and often cannot swim.

Rescue operations are made more difficult because some ships rarely have passenger lists.
