A car rammed into a crowd of people in the South Korean capital Seoul, killing at least nine people, police said.

The road accident occurred around 9:30 PM local time (1:30 PM BST), they said.

According to Yonhap news agency, a man believed to be in his 60s drove his vehicle into pedestrians waiting at a traffic stop.

At least four people have been taken to hospital.

Police say they are investigating the incident but warn the number of casualties could rise.

According to local media, the car was driving in the wrong direction and collided with two other vehicles before colliding with pedestrians.

According to police, the accident occurred at an intersection near Seoul City Hall. The driver in question, who was arrested at the scene, told police that the car suddenly accelerated.

Six people died on the spot, while three others died later from their injuries.

Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, reports that the arrested man was 68 years old.

According to a recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on road safety in the country, the maximum speed limit in the country is 50 km/h (31 mph) on general urban roads and 30 km/h in residential areas.

In 2022, pedestrians in South Korea were responsible for 35% of all traffic fatalities. That is a high percentage compared to other OECD countries, the agency reported.

But in the same report, the OECD emphasized that the number of road deaths in the country has decreased in recent years.
