July 15 (UPI) — Animal control workers went to Winnipeg City Hall in Manitoba, Canada, to remove a small bird of prey that had entered through a stairwell.
According to the City of Winnipeg Animal Control, the young American kestrel was spotted on the stairs of the Susan A. Thompson Building. Officers rushed to the scene.
A video shared by Animal protection shows how the kestrel is caught in a net.
“We don’t think it was in that stairwell very long because so many people use the stairwells in these buildings,” said Leland Gordon, general manager of Winnipeg Animal Services. told CTV News.
The bird was examined at the Pembina Veterinary Hospital and then transferred to the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Lisa Tretiak, president and co-founder of the rehabilitation center, said the kestrel “is an animal that we consider an immature or teenage animal, an animal that is learning to fly but is not very good at it yet and is still learning to hunt.”
Tretiak said the kestrel will be released back into the wild once it gains some weight.
