An Air India flight bound for San Francisco International Airport was diverted to Russia on Thursday morning, according to Air India.
The airline said flight AI-183 from Delhi to SF was diverted to Krasnoyarsk International Airport (UNKL) in Russia due to a technical issue.
“The aircraft landed safely and we are working with the relevant authorities to ensure guests are cared for while we determine the next steps. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew remains our utmost priority,” the airline said on X.
We have contacted Air India to ask if there are any US citizens among the 243 passengers on board, but have not yet received a response.
The airline responded to people’s concerns on social media and said that a third-party support flight was being arranged. A ferry flight was being arranged to pick up passengers at KJA Airport to take them to SFO.
A San Jose resident told us that his elderly in-laws were on the diverted flight and said he was frustrated with the overall communication between the airline and passengers.
“We just check Twitter (X), Ashish Shrivastanva. “We just try to see if there is any update. I think they posted an update six hours ago. Six or eight hours ago, but no update since then. Checking online. There is no communication from Air India at all.”
Air India said in a number of comments on social media that efforts were being made to operate the ferry flight as soon as possible. They said they would share further updates as soon as they became available.
