A firefighter has died in Germany during a rescue operation to help people trapped in floods that have hit parts of the south of the country.

The firefighter was in a rubber boat with three other rescuers in the town of Pfaffenhofen in Bavaria late Saturday evening when the ship capsized.

His body was found early on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Pfaffenhofen district office said.

The three other firefighters were rescued. They were on their way to rescue a family in the heavily flooded area. No details are known about what happened to the family.

Fire crews and other first responders have been working continuously since the heavy rains, which have not stopped since Friday.

The Swabian Alps south of Stuttgart and the region around Augsburg, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Regensburg are particularly at risk on Sunday due to rain and thunderstorms.

A disaster alert has been issued in several districts of Bavaria.

The German army has stepped in to help as the region’s rivers have swollen. Many hundreds of people have been evacuated and a prison has been evacuated in Memmingen, west of Munich. The hundred prisoners have been taken care of by nearby institutions.
