An event organised by politicians from Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the western city of Essen was disrupted several times on Thursday by beeping electronic devices and demonstrators.

Speeches by members of the far-right party, which saw a sharp rise in votes in two state elections in eastern Germany on Sunday, were interrupted by noise from the audience in Essen’s Philharmonic Hall.

Some of the approximately 200 people in the crowd then began shouting slogans such as “Fascists out” and “Nazis out.”

The protesters were removed from the hall by security personnel and an estimated 25 mini electronic devices were found under the seats.

About 4,000 people had gathered outside the venue to protest against the anti-immigration AfD, cheering the troublemakers as they were led out.
