(Bloomberg) — India’s Maharashtra state has approved the purchase of 256 hectares of salt pan land in northeast Mumbai to boost Adani Group’s project to redevelop Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums.

The salt pan land will be acquired from the central government and leased to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt, which is rehabilitating the 620-hectare district in the heart of the financial capital, according to a September 30 press release from the state cabinet.
The land will be used to build cheap and affordable housing for residents of Dharavi, who need to be relocated from the densely packed slums. A survey of existing residents and businesses is being conducted to determine who will be resettled or relocated in Dharavi.
Some residents of Dharavi are against the project and the ongoing investigation, while the main opposition party in Maharashtra has said it will scrap the deal with the Adani Group if voted to power in the upcoming state elections.
