ACWA Power has started construction of a 200 MW wind power plant in Beruniy and a 100 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
The project, with an investment value of $260 million, is a partnership with JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan (NEGU).
The Beruniy wind farm will generate 800 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean energy annually, enough to meet the electricity needs of 292,000 households.
The initiative is expected to save 212 million cubic meters of natural gas annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 336,000 tons.
ACWA Power’s plans include the construction of a 45 km double-circuit 220 kV high-voltage transmission line to the Beruniy substation and the development of a 100 MW energy storage system.
The project will be commercially operational in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Uzbekistan is the second largest market for ACWA Power in terms of investments, with 15 ongoing projects and a cumulative investment volume of $15 billion.
Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACWA Power, said: “I express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoyev for leading the foundation stone laying ceremony of this crucial project, which marks an important milestone in our partnership with the Republic of Uzbekistan.
“This project represents not only our commitment to sustainable energy development, but also our shared vision for a prosperous future.
“Together, we are paving the way for transformative solutions that strengthen communities, drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for the people of Uzbekistan. We are honored to be part of this important journey.”
In July 2024, ACWA Power the sale completed of a 35% ownership interest in its two Asian subsidiaries, ACWA Power Bash Wind Project Holding and ACWA Power Uzbekistan Wind Project Holding, to China Southern Power Grid International (HK).
