A Kremlin spokesman on Friday denied Russia’s involvement in an alleged plot to assassinate the head of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, which provides significant military aid to Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow he could not comment on the allegation, which was first reported by the U.S. broadcaster CNN on Thursday. “You can’t take such reports seriously,” he said, claiming the article was unfounded and based on anonymous sources.

According to the report, which has since been confirmed by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, US intelligence discovered earlier this year that the Russian government was planning to assassinate Armin Papperger, the CEO of Rheinmetall.

The report has sparked outrage in Berlin, with German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser saying the government is taking Russian threats “very seriously.”
