According to police, the person who died in a fire at a refugee camp in northern Germany on Monday was a 28-year-old man from Ethiopia.

The man’s body was found Monday in a room at the facility in the Lower Saxony town of Buchholz after an explosion set off a fire. Investigators believe he likely caused the explosion himself, police said in a statement Tuesday.

A decision on whether to conduct an autopsy would be made after consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the statement said. The investigation is currently focused on the motive and background of the incident.

Twenty people were injured in the fire, including a police officer. His life is not in danger, but he has serious burns and is in intensive care, the police statement said.

The other injured, including residents of the temporary housing units, were treated at the scene. Some were then taken to hospital.
