The Greens in France want to govern after the surprise election victory of the new left-wing alliance NFP, of which they were part.

“We have won and now we are going to govern,” said Marine Tondelier, secretary general of the Green Party, in Paris.

“Tonight there is a great chance that the (New) Popular Front will lead the way,” Tondelier said. “Tonight social justice has won, tonight ecological justice has won and tonight the people have won and now it is just beginning.”

The highest turnout since 1981 showed how important the general election was for the people of France, Tondelier said. “This is a wonderful victory for democracy, it belongs to all of you.”

“We were at our best thanks to the New Popular Front,” said the Green Party leader. “This is an immense hope created by this left-wing coalition and the Greens, which is the event of this election.”

The new left-wing alliance of Greens, Socialists, Communists and the left was formed only four weeks ago, the Green leader stressed.
