On Friday, Keir Starmer’s first day in office saw several briefings, including one with the famous feline from 10 Downing Street. Larry the Cat will once again welcome a prime minister to the 17th-century landmark, making it Starmer’s sixth. According to AP Newsthe newly appointed prime minister could get to know the local cat before his working day ends.

The cute gray and white striped has captured the hearts of many and has a huge following on social media. With over 860,000 followers on X — formerly known as Twitter — he is one of the most famous residents of 10 Downing Street. The cat was once a stray who was rescued by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. He was brought to the iconic landmark to help with the rodent problem.

Larry the cat has been the “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office” since 2011. He has welcomed and said goodbye to five prime ministers and is all set to welcome his sixth British prime minister, Keir Starmer. While David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have come and gone, Larry has stayed because someone has to be in charge, as he noted in a after on his X account, formerly known as Twitter.

The cat is about 17 years old and is usually busy greeting guests at 10 Downing Street. His core job remains the same, however, which is to find “a solution to the mouse infestation of the house”, according to the Downing Street website.
