Police in Namibia are investigating the deaths of four children who were playing in an empty old freezer in the northeastern Zambezi region.
The children, aged between three and six, were found on Monday afternoon in an unused freezer in the densely populated area of Katima Mulilo town.
Police suspect the children accidentally got stuck while playing and suffocated. Investigations are ongoing.
Of the four children, two suffocated in the refrigerator, while two others died in hospital during treatment, the public broadcaster reported.
“When I entered, I saw paramedics attending to my daughter and another girl. They rushed them to the hospital while the other two were loaded into police cars,” Aranges Shoro, the children’s father, told privately owned newspaper The Namibian.
The two, who were rushed to nearby Katima Mulilo State Hospital, were pronounced dead on arrival, the public broadcaster said. NBC’s news website reported.
It is not clear why the broken freezer was left outside the home of one of the affected families.
