Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his “deep gratitude” to his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis for the upcoming transfer of a Patriot air defense system.

It is an important contribution to protecting Ukraine “from Russian missile terror and further proof of the sincere friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries,” Zelensky wrote on X.

Iohannis signed a resolution of the Romanian parliament that made the transfer, which was announced in June, possible.

Zelensky has repeatedly asked Ukraine’s partners for more air defense systems so he can better protect his people from ongoing Russian air and missile attacks.

Ukraine already has four complete Patriot air defense systems, as well as additional launchers from the Netherlands. Three of the systems come from Germany, while Kiev received another from the US.

There was talk of more systems from Israeli stockpiles, but the current status of negotiations is unknown.
