Polio vaccinations start in Gaza — Global Issues

globalissues

Hundreds of families in Gaza have been queuing since early Sunday morning to wait for their child to receive a polio vaccination, a campaign to prevent the virus from resurfacing, citing hygienic conditions as the cause.

Speaking to international media on Sunday, Sam Rose, a spokesman for UNRWAthe UN agency for Palestinian refugees said more than 200 teams are administering the vaccine at 25 sites in central Gaza.

Mr Rose said the teams, which will go from tent to tent, must reach all children in Gaza under the age of 10 for the campaign to be successful.

The operation – organised by UNRWA, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Palestinian Ministry of Health – will continue in the coming days, if the temporary lull in fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces continues.
