Vion Food Group has announced that approximately 165 jobs in the Netherlands are at risk due to the further streamlining of its activities.

The Boxtel-headquartered company said in a statement that there will be about 40 “mandatory redundancies”. It said that “changing market conditions require adjustments in the size of the organization”.

The company plans to leave Germany and focus on the Benelux market.

Earlier this month, Vion announced has sold its stake in two locations in Germany to fellow meat company Erzeugergemeinschaft Südbayern.

In January the company closed one site in Germany and struck a deal to sell three others in the countryFive months later, Vion said it would leave the market completely.

Vion said in yesterday’s (August 28) statement: “Due to changing market conditions, it is necessary to continuously adjust. Vion has decided to focus more on strengthening chains in the Benelux.

“Vion benefits from market leadership in pork and beef in this region, as well as animal welfare and sustainability, its global sales network and advanced data-driven valorisation capabilities.

“The successful transformation programme and divestments in Germany provide a solid foundation for Vion’s future growth and resilience, but require adjustments to the indirect organisation.”

The meat and poultry group added that these steps are “inevitable to leave behind a more efficient and therefore future-proof overhead organisation”.

Vion said it had started talks with the unions but could not reach a “social plan”. However, it did say it had reached a “social plan” with a works council and that the dismissal process was “currently being carried out with the utmost care”.

It added: “Vion is fully aware that this is a difficult time for employees, but is doing everything it can to limit the impact as much as possible.”

Just eat has contacted Vion and local unions for more information about the layoffs.
