Flight diverted to Memphis after passengers injured by turbulence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A United Airlines flight from Cancun, Mexico, en route to Chicago was diverted to Memphis on Wednesday after several passengers were injured on the flight.

United Airlines reported that Flight 1196 encountered a brief period of severe turbulence while the seat belt warning light was on.

Paramedics met the plane at the gate and one passenger was taken to the hospital. The Memphis Fire Department said six other passengers were treated and released,

“We are grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of our employees and customers, and we expect the flight to depart for Chicago shortly,” a United Airlines spokesperson said.

There were 172 passengers and seven crew members on board the flight.
