50Hertz has awarded a contract worth €2.9 billion to a consortium consisting of Dragados Offshore – a subsidiary of Cobra IS – and Siemens Energy for the development of two electrical conversion stations for the LanWin 3 offshore grid connection project in the German North Sea.
The consortium is responsible for the design, construction and installation of the electrical conversion stations.
The facilities are an integral part of the LanWin 3 offshore grid connection, which connects a wind farm in the North Sea to the electricity grid on the mainland.
The project’s offshore converter platform will convert the alternating current generated by the wind farm into high-voltage direct current (HVDC).
The conversion is crucial to minimize electricity losses during the long transmission to land.
The wind farm is located in the N-11.1 area, 120 km northwest of Helgoland in Germany’s exclusive economic zone.
It is connected to the mainland via a 200 km long submarine cable to Büsum, which is connected to an underground cable that runs another 15 km to the Heide research area.
The contract also includes the construction of an onshore platform in Schwerin in northeastern Germany.
This installation will convert the direct current back into alternating current, which will then be supplied to the electricity grid in the south for transmission and distribution.
The offshore and onshore conversion platforms offer a significant capacity of 2 GW.
German transmission system operator 50Hertz will use HVDC transmission technology at a voltage level of 525 kV to establish the grid connection.
The production of the offshore converter platform will take place at the Dragados offshore yard in Andalusia, Spain.
Cobra IS has previously demonstrated its expertise in the sector by delivering the DolWin 6 project in 2023.
Under the current contract, the company will build nine offshore energy conversion platforms, with a total capacity of 16 GW.
In April 2024, 50Hertz announced that it Start building on land for the Ostwind 3 grid connection, which connects the 300 MW offshore wind farm Windanker in the Baltic Sea to the mainland in Germany.
