BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A dramatic bus crash at the entrance to a highway tunnel in northeastern Spain left five people injured, three of them seriously, officials said Tuesday.

The bus was carrying 50-60 textile workers to a nearby factory when the accident occurred on the C-32 highway, about an hour’s drive north of Barcelona, emergency services and local officials said.

From the position of the bus it appears that it hit the slanted edge as it entered the tunnel and was bounced upwards until the front came to rest at the top, placing the bus diagonally opposite the entrance to the tunnel.

Emergency services for the Catalonia region said three people in critical condition were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Barcelona. Another two people were taken to a local hospital.

The accident occurred near the town of Pineda de Mar, a coastal resort on the Mediterranean Sea. Traffic authorities closed the highway to all vehicles travelling north.
