ISLAMABAD (AP) — A storm brought heavy rain to the east Afghanistan At least 35 people were killed on Monday, a Taliban official said.

According to Sediqullah Quraishi, provincial director of the Information and Culture Department, many others were injured in Nangarhar province.

The dead included five members of the same family who died when the roof of their house collapsed in Surkh Rod district, Quraishi said. Four other family members were injured.

According to him, the dead and injured include women and children, and the bad weather has destroyed many properties and crops in several parts of the province.

Aminullah Sharif, head of the regional hospital in Nangarhar, said 207 wounded were transferred for treatment from Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and nearby districts.

He added that dozens of local residents had gathered at the hospital to donate blood for the injured.

Earlier, the World Food Programme said that the exceptionally heavy rainfall had killed in Afghanistan more than 300 people and thousands of homes destroyed, mainly in the northern province of Baghlan on May 10-11. Survivors have been left without homes, land and sources of income, WFP said.
