Fourteen people were killed when a three-storey building collapsed in the southern Egyptian city of Assiut, Governor Essam Saad said on Tuesday.

The bodies were pulled from the rubble during search and rescue operations on Monday after the building collapsed.

Six people were rescued and taken to hospital, Saad said.

Poor maintenance of old buildings and violations of building codes are often blamed for fatal collapses of residential buildings in Egypt.
